Health Bills Could Close More Trauma Center Doors
Closings Would Leave Many Florida Residents Without
Life-Saving Care
March 27, 2007 - Committees in the Florida House and Senate
today voted on bills that would substantially weaken Florida's
already financially fragile network of trauma centers. Trauma
center physicians and administrators from around the state called
both pieces of legislation accounting gimmicks, which if passed,
would have tragic consequences for Florida residents.

Florida's Trauma Centers are in a funding crisis that is
affecting people from all walks of life. The expense to operate our
state's 21 trauma centers is estimated at over $126 million per
year, and hospital revenues do not meet these mounting expenses.
Extraordinary expenses associated with maintaining 24-hour
readiness--having more than a dozen physician specialists and an
operating room team on standby at all times--is a costly business.
Now is the time to ensure that doors to the trauma center don't
close forever.
